Somos Mayfair

Somos Mayfair is a 20-year old grassroots organization that provides direct services and community-building to very low-income, immigrant residents of the Mayfair neighborhood in East San Jose. It mission is to support children, organize families, and connect neighbors to uplift the dreams, power, and leadership of community and address systemic inequities. Somos provides direct services with a community building approach. Using a highly successful Promotor Model, it recruits and trains residents as peer educators that engage other neighborhood residents in developing their literacy and parenting skills, healthy living habits, and leadership/advocacy skills. Since 2012, their En Nuestras Manos/In Our Hands initiative has trained 166 promotores who worked directly with 4,000+ children and their parents to achieve a 43% gain in school readiness and a 50% gain in 3rd grade reading proficiency among Mayfair school children.
