Founded in 1993, the Mosaic High School Journalism Workshop has provided nearly 400 Greater Bay Area high school students of color with a unique, hands-on journalism experience led by professional newspaper reporters, editors, and photographers.A collaborative project of the San Jose Chapter of the California Chicano News Media Association, the San Jose Mercury News, and San Jose State University, the program engages students in an intensive “boot-camp” experience designed to inspire them to pursue a career in journalism in order to create a pipeline for diversity in the field. To date, 14% of Mosaic alumni have become journalists and another 49% are pursuing related careers. CFF has supported this project since 2001.
