Featured Education Grantee

Starting in 2004 as an after-school-program, the Joseph George Elementary School STEM Workshop annually provides 25-30 Latino students with hands-on math and science experiences, tutoring, and mentoring to promote their academic success and college readiness. Joseph George STEM Workshop is a partnership program of the City of San Jose’s Facility Re-use Program, the Alum Rock School District, and the K-12 MESA Program at San Jose State. The program supplements classroom curriculum, providing students with project-based learning opportunities that address the new “Common Core” state standards. Through projects, students learn the proper use of various hand tools to measure, cut, drill, join, wire and layout which are the basic techniques important for engineering and construction. Students are also engaged in electricity, magnetism, and chemistry experiments. Advanced students join a MESA team in completing competitive projects that have won medals in Robotics Competitions at SJSU.
