Founded in 1987, the mission of the San Jose Multicultural Artists Guild (SJMAG) is to unite and serve communities by conducting cross-cultural arts programming reflective of the experiences of African-Americans, women, and Chicano/Latinos. As a resident arts organization at School of Arts and Culture at the Mexican Heritage Plaza, SJMAG operates a variety of in-school, after-school, and summer arts education programs throughout the year. The centerpiece of their community arts program is the annual Día de los Muertos celebration where participants can enjoy a free festival of dance, music, drumming performances and art activities for children. They also curate and install Mexican altares that are on display at venues throughout Santa Clara County during the month of October and conduct mask-making workshops at designated schools in low-income Latino neighborhoods. A recent CFF grant supported this event in 2013.
