Calpulli Tonalehqueh is a local, volunteer-run membership collaborative whose name in Nahuatl means “community of guardians who accompany the sun.” Established in 2004, they are an intergenerational community with a fluid membership of 200 and a core leadership of elders and dancers each with more than 18 years of Aztec dancing experience. Calpulli means “great house” or “group of houses,” a fundamental unit of Aztec society that might be known in today’s society as a clan or tribe. Members organize ceremonial dance events, art and music workshops, agricultural initiatives, educational summits, and pan-indigenous exchanges, and engage in community outreach and activism.
